What is Depression (Major Depressive Disorder)?

Depressive Disorders are typically diagnosed as one of two disorders: Major Depression and Dysthymia. While the intensity and duration of symptoms are different, the types of symptoms experienced are similar.

Symptoms of depression include:

  • Problems in concentration, memory or making decisions
  • Lethargy
  • Feelings of guilt, worthlessness, powerlessness
  • Feelings of Hopelessness
  • Undersleeping or oversleeping
  • Irritability, Agitation
  • Decreased motivation to participate in fun activities or sex
  • Increase or decrease in appetite/weight
  • Physical pains (headaches, stomachaches) which are not medically based
  • Feelings of anxiety, sadness, or emptiness
  • Suicidal thoughts, gestures, or attempts

What is the treatment for depression?

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is recognized as one of the most effective treatments for depression.

Cognitive Therapy focuses on identifying and changing problematic thinking styles which may only serve to exacerbate the development and maintenance of depressive symptoms. By identifying distorted thoughts the patient learns to replace them with balanced and more positive thoughts.

Behavioral Therapy encourages the patient to decrease behaviors which reinforce negative conclusions and to adopt behaviors which reinforce positive beliefs.
